Synopsis: A subjective view of the communal hysteria of the 1940s, the film unfolds in flashback as it revolves around the ideological dilemma of Saket Ram (Kamal Haasan), a Brahmin from Tamil Nadu who, on losing his wife, Aparna (Rani Mukherji) to rape and death at the hands of a mob of Muslim rioters in Calcutta, resolves to assassinate Gandhi on the belief that the latter is responsible for the sectarian killings of the Partition period. As part of his enterprise, Ram gains insight into Gandhi’s principles of Ahimsa (non-violence) and undergoes a change of heart, his redemption propelled further by the assassination of his Pathan friend, Amjad Khan (Shahrukh Khan), at the hands of a Hindu mob. The film deals with this tussle between Ram’s conscience and his avowed mission as a militant Hindu nationalist as it reopens some of India’s most painful wounds through the personalized narrative of this traumatized survivor.
